In the buddhist heartland
Due to its long history of isolation Ladakh is one of the last functioning Mahayana Buddhist societies. Day to day life is entwined with the Buddhist philosophy. The most common sights all over this region are the domed Stupas or Chorten, containing the ashes of Lamas, and believed to ward off evil spirits. Built on the outskirts of villages are Mani walls, each stone is inscribed with a prayer and they are can be up to 1km long. Deeply symbolic to Ladakhi life are Prayer wheels . These vary in size and contain thousands of scrolls of paper on which the prayer om mani padme hum is written.
Discover the spiritual centres of Ladakh, the magnificant monasteries containing many examples of buddhist art. Next to the scared river Indus is the world heritage site of Alchi. A 1000 year old treasure box of buddhist wall paintings and sculptures created by the ancient artists of Tibet, Kashmir and Afghanistan. Our guided tours explain the wonderful rich history and culture of this dramatic region.
